Trying to find an apartment for the first time is a big step in your life. You’re moving on to a new chapter, full of independence and adventure. And you want your new place of living to reflect that! You want it to meet your needs, whether they relate to style, budget, or neighborhood. Here are some tips to help you find the best apartments.
Talk to the neighbors – If you know that there’s a specific area you’d like to live in, go scope out the people who live there! Track down a friendly local and get the low-down on what the neighborhood is like. Is it quiet? Are the people around there friendly? How do they feel about pets? Parties? Parking? There are a ton of things about your new apartment that can be influenced by the neighbors and the neighborhood.
Find out about the history – When you think you’ve found a place that looks right for you, do some research about the house/building. When was it listed most recently, and what was it listed for? If you’re trying to find an apartment or rent a loft, you don’t want to find out you’re being overcharged, or that the building you’re moving into has a history of termites. Check the fine print.
Get an idea of the perks – Renting an apartment can be pretty stressful if your expectations are too high. That being said, the best apartments will have the right features you need to make your new life easy and worry-free. Some apartments will cover the cost of some utilities, or will offer free cable/internet. You can rent an apartment that allows pets, or one with on-site laundry. Just remember to check this kind of thing ahead of time. And if you aren’t sure if something is included, just ask!
