Help the American Red Cross with Your Clothing Donations
Do you have used clothing donations to make? Were you aware that an American Red Cross Clothing pickup service is available through GreenDrop? This is a convenient way for you to donate clothes to the Red Cross.
Every year, 70% of people in the United States donate to charitable organizations. The American Red Cross, as you may be aware, is available every day of the year. They provide a variety of services to families and communities in need. In addition to clothing and blankets, they also provide shelter, food, and water.
The American Red Cross is also well known for its blood drives. During life-threatening emergencies, natural disasters, and similar situations, such as accidents, the American Red Cross makes blood available to those in need.
If you’re going through your family’s items to prepare for a Red Cross clothing pickup, it’s a good rule of thumb to donate items that have been outgrown or not used for six months or longer. If you’re still not sure what type of clothes donations to make, here is a short list:
- Women’s pants, shirts, dresses, coats, sweaters, socks, shoes, boots, and pajamas
- Men’s suits, coats, jeans, T-shirts, sweaters, shirts, shoes, socks, boots, and pajamas
- Children’s pants, shirts, jackets, sweaters, dresses, coats, socks, shoes, boots, and sleepwear
- Infants’ layettes, t-shirts, onesies, caps, sweaters, jackets, socks, and sleepwear
Remember that the American Red Cross will also accept donations of household items. These, too, can be picked up by GreenDrop:
- Household linens
- Afghans, blankets, comforters, and quilts
- Home appliances
- Electronics
- Dishes and silverware
- Pots and pans
Children’s toys and books can also be donated to the American Red Cross. So, too, can books for adults.
Since many of these items are either given to families in need or sold to fund programs, it is helpful when they are in good used condition. However, since clothing and household items can often be mended or repaired, it’s a good practice to donate them even when they aren’t in perfect condition. The Red Cross will be able to decide how they can best be used.
At tax time, you are able to deduct your charitable clothing donations. The amount you are able to deduct is based on the value of the items you donate. Since you will receive a receipt for your donations, a tax accountant can provide you with detailed information on limits and other relevant information.
