Tips for a better night’s sleep
- Practice good sleep hygiene. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning. Do not work or watch TV in bed. Do not look at a screen (television, tablet, computer) within 30 minutes of going to bed. These devices have light that mimics daylight and that tells your brain you should be awake. Do the same thing each night and your body will sense you are getting ready to go to sleep and it will start to wind down for the day.
- If you are in bed longer than 20 minutes without sleep, get up and do something else. Even if your bed comfort level is high, if you are laying in bed and not sleeping, get up and go do something. You want to condition your brain to associate your bed with sleep. By not sleeping but remaining in bed, you are doing the opposite.
- Make your bed as comfortable as possible. Many people find adjustable beds, such as sleep comfort adjustable beds, help. Electric beds that allow you to move them info the right position help with any aches and pains that interfere with sleep. Rooms that are cooler are easier to sleep in than warmer rooms because our bodies become cooler when we sleep.
- Be careful about eating. If you are hungry or too full when you go to bed, that will cause you problems both falling and staying asleep. You might want to have something light about 30 minutes before you go to bed. Also sleep comfort adjustable beds are good for preventing heartburn. By raising the head of the bed, the acid from the stomach does not go into the esophagus where it causes problems. Many doctors tell their patients with heartburn to raise the head of their bed for this reason.
Many Americans find themselves with sleep deficits that cannot be fixed or remedied with one or two good nights of sleep. Sleep deprivation leads to a host of short and long term health problems. If you really cannot get any sleep, you should talk to your doctor to see if there is an underlying problem that needs to be addressed.
