How to Figure Out What Clothes to Donate

Purple heart clothes donation

It isn’t hard to donate clothes, but it can be tricky to figure out what clothes to donate. After all, you never know when you might want to wear that shirt, even though it still has the tags on it and you honestly can’t remember when you even bought it in the first place.

Luckily, there are some pretty neat strategies out there to help you sort out clothing donations. Here are just a few.

Start 3 Piles. – One of the best ways to figure out what clothes to donate are to sort your closets, dressers, wardrobes, and what have you into three piles: keep, donate, and toss, all of which are pretty self-explanatory. It’s best to start with something you definitely know belongs in the toss pile, as that will gear you up to get rid of things. If you start with the keep pile, you may wind up hanging on to some things you’d be best letting go.

Pick a Category. – If you have a whole lot of clothes, you may be wise to try starting with a category. For example, sweaters, sweatpants, or jeans. This is a good idea for two reasons. First, it’ll help you work more efficiently. Secondly, it’ll prevent you from potentially throwing everything of one type away. You don’t want to be left with no hoodies now, do you?

Use the One Year Rule. – Once you’re all done, go back through your keep pile, and call yourself out on each piece. If you haven’t worn it in a year, and if it’s not comfortable, then it should either be tossed or donated. Be honest with yourself. You’ll be glad you did.

Making clothes donations not only helps those less fortunate
, but can also help you. It can make you feel great inside, and it can clear up closet space. When you see how much room you have, you may wonder why you don’t donate clothes more often.
