3 Reasons to Make Consistent Clothing Donations

Clothing donations are essential to helping families in need. For those less fortunate simply providing appropriate clothes to their children for the winter season can be an immense burden, which is why charities that pick up clothing donations are so important around this time of year. An estimated 2 million tons of clothing and textiles were recycled or donated to charity in 2011 in the United States.

While giving charitable donations in the form of money are obviously crucial as well, clothing is something most anyone can afford to give and because of the inherent nature of growing to big for things many families with kids have plenty of it. Here are three reasons you should consider trying to donate something consistently.

1.) Set a Good Example: Far and away one of the most important reasons to give clothing donations, or anything for that matter, is the example you’re setting for your children and those around you. Every child is influenced by his environment growing up and if they never see their parents care enough to give to those in need there’s a really good chance they will grow up with the same attitude.

2.) Reduce Waste: Even though a vast amount of clothing gets donated every year, there is still a great deal of potential for more. In 2011 it’s estimated that 90% of the clothing and textiles thrown out in the U.S. could have been reused or recycled. Considering research shows that 12 millions tons are thrown out each year, that’s a whole lot of clothing donations that could have been made to help the poor and struggling.

3.) Tax Write-Off: Finally, if there’s little to no altruistic bones in your body there is still reason to give donations. If you keep track of everything you donate and provide a legitimate estimate of value you might be able to claim many donations as a tax write-off next spring.

If even after reading and considering those reasons you can’t find it in your heart to donate to charities around this time of year may God have mercy on your soul. Maybe that’s too dramatic, but keep in mind you could very easily find yourself on the other side someday for some reason. If you’re not willing to help someone else how could you possibly expect someone to help you?
